Alex Knop put down 19 kills on 49 swings for East Mills Thursday in a 3-0 win over Essex in the Corner Conference season finale for both teams. The win is the 21st of the season for EM. With teams entering the game with 5-1 conference records, the game became a de facto contest for the runner up spot in the final Corner standings.
"We had a goal of winning a tournament this season but finished 2nd at Mt Ayr, 3rd at Missouri Valley and third in Bedford, said Wolverines coach Conni Blank. "Our main goals are to always play like a team, always give our best effort, and have fun."
East Mills was also third at the Corner Conference tournament, where they fell to this very same Essex team in the semifinals.
"We have been working on defending the back row attack and getting to more balls," said Blank whose team limited the Trojanettes a .109 kill efficiency as a team. Daiton Martin led Essex with 12 kills on the night.
Shellby Moore added 11 kills for EM who improves to 21-8 on the season. Dezirae Drake and Rachel Schaefer combined for 55 assists. Knop and Moore led the way defensively as well with 25 and 21 digs respectively.
Regional play begins for both teams next week.
